Sattari is a taluka in the north-east of Goa known for its greenery and dense forest. Its headquarters is Valpoi. The Western Ghats form the eastern part of the Sattari taluka. The Mandovi River is considered to be the lifeline of Sattari. It has a geographical area of 490 km2; the Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary covers 208 km2 of this area. Valpoi is a Village situated in the Sattari taluka that has rocky hills and a dense forest. It gets its name from two words Val and Poi out of which Val means river and Poi means other side.
Valpoi is famous as the Police Training Service (PTS) Centre of Goa is situated here. During the Portuguese rule it was a military camp and in 1962 it was transformed into a Police Training School. There is also the Forest Training School in Valpoi which is the only school in Goa that caters to the demands of the forest guards and trains them to safeguard the natural resources of Goa. |
